For most car consumers, car safety, especially steel plate thickness, which has been a hot topic for discussion. Regarding the thickness of steel plates of various departments and models, it is more common to think that Japanese steel plates are thinner and German-made steel plates are relatively thick. As for how thin or thick the steel plate is, most consumers do not have a reliable basis, and often judge by their own subjective feelings.


First, the inspection process:

In the process of car paint coating thickness gauge of the body cover (ie, steel plate thickness detection), the testing models are divided into five parts, namely, the hood, the roof, the front and rear doors, the left and right side panels, and the trunk cover. Second, the sampling range

The survey involves 26 brands and 95 models of autonomous, European (including British, French, German, etc.), Japanese and American cars. According to the relevant "Automotive Engineering Manual", the outer parts of the body are used for steel plates in the top cover, door, fender, trunk lid, engine cover, etc., and the thickness is generally allowed to be from 0.8mm to 2.0mm.


Third, the results analysis
1) the car is the smaller, the skin is the thinner
According to our experience, we tend to think that the smaller car body, the thinner is the car body, the thinner is the steel plate thickness. However, from our actual results, this is not the case. It is true that some of the cars have thinner steel plate thicknesses, but for more brands, they are basically the same. The steel plate thickness of some A0 or A-class cars even exceeds the steel plate thickness of some brand B-class cars. Therefore, the car is not necessarily thin, the key is to look at the attitude of the company.


In contrast, we may think that luxury cars should have a thicker steel plate thickness. But now, this view is not established. In this steel thickness survey, the two BMW models look very special. After applying the lightweight technology, the average measuring values of the steel plate thickness of the BMW 328Li and the BMW X1 are only 0.82mm and 0.86mm, respectively, which are much smaller than the Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Tiguan of the same class, but still have enough strength to ensure the occupants of the car.


In the application of lightweight technology, luxury cars are not necessarily thick steel plates. On the contrary, they can also meet the needs of reducing fuel consumption and maintaining body strength.Independent brand/Japanese car is not in line with European/American.On the whole, we can find that the worst performance is not the Japanese car, but just our own brand. The average thickness of several self-owned brand automobile steel plates sampled and surveyed is only about 1mm, and the average thickness of steel plates of some brand models is even less than 1mm.


Japanese cars are not thin steel plates, and their overall performance is better than their own brands. However, if we divide the thickness by 1.2mm, we can see that most of the following demarcation lines are self-owned brands and Japanese cars, while European cars and American cars are almost above the dividing line. Therefore, the view that the Japanese steel plate is thinner and the German-made American steel plate is relatively thick is not out of thin air. Our test results also prove this point. Self-owned brands and Japanese cars still need to be improved.


3)SUV steel plate has a high average thickness


Different models have different uses and design concepts. At present, the urban SUV, which is popular in the past, is born out of the mature model platform. From the inspection data alone, it basically maintains the steel plate thickness level consistent with the platform model, and slightly improves the rigidity; for pure road like Land Rover For off-road vehicles, thicker steel plates are required for protection than ordinary urban SUVs. Therefore, the Land Rover brand has become the brand with the thickest steel plate thickness in this test. The flagship model Range Rover is also the model with the thickest steel plate thickness in this test. In addition, Mitsubishi Outlander's data is particularly eye-catching in Japanese cars that are not ideal overall. The average reference value of 1.65mm shows the strong adaptability of this SUV, and also highlights the characteristics of the SUV model steel plate thickness.
