Non-destructive testing (NDT) covers a wide group of techniques used to evaluate the properties of a material, part, product, weld, or system without materially affecting the integrity of the unit being inspected or investigated under the test procedure.
Piezoelectric ceramic materials are the active component in nondestructive testing transducers. The material is driven with an ac signal to generate an ultrasonic sound wave that is coupled into an object. The ultrasonic wave is reflected back to the transducer when it encounters a change in density in the material caused by a crack, porosity, or other object with a different density.
Piezoelectric nondestructive testing is widely used to check the quality of welds and to monitor fatigue in welds and structural components such as aircraft wings and pressure vessels. Transducers may be produced in a wide range of frequencies to achieve different depths of penetration and resolution.
