Analysis of the application of ultrasonic transducer in the air cylinder

Detecting the position of the piston in the cylinder is essential for accurately monitoring and controlling various machines and systems-from pneumatic control on the production line to hydraulic cylinders on excavators, to dumping parts on trucks. Traditional solutions usually modify the cylinder itself by adding a magnetic ring to the cylinder rod. Install a high pressure resistant sensor in the cylinder wall to detect the end position. Both solutions require modification and resealing of the cylinder.

Now, you don't need to modify the cylinder itself to accurately detect the piston position of ultrasonic distance transducer. At the same time, fast and convenient installation and reliable data are also important regardless of the piston material, design and whether the piston itself is pneumatic or hydraulic.

Solution

Ultrasonic sensors are often used to detect piston position. For this, a tube need to be installed next to the cylinder. Install a sliding arm in the pipe and connect it to the piston. Installing an ultrasonic proximity sensor on the other end of the pipe to detect the distance from the other end of the sliding arm. The ultrasonic sensor head and its ultrasonic transducer extend into the pipeline. An opening is provided in the pipe to allow the air in the sliding arm to be discharged.

Depending on the cylinder length, UC800-F77, M18 or M30 series ultrasonic sensors can be used. This solution does not require modification and resealing of the cylinder itself, and it will not withstand pressure because it is installed outside the air cylinder. The pipes used must be uniformed and free of welding seams. Depending on its length, the pipe diameter can be from 30 mm to 65 mm. Ultrasonic sensors can be easily parameterized as needed.

Unique advantage

Ultrasonic sensor solutions can be installed in appropriate locations around the cylinder without the need to modify the cylinder itself. It can realize the position detection of both ends through the continuous measurement of the switch output and the movement of the piston. Even in extremely challenging environments, the integrated temperature compensation in the ultrasonic sensor ensures reliable data recording.
